Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is established pursuant to chapter 9 of the Harford County Code. The HPC consists of seven members appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Council. The HPC is also staffed by the county’s Historic Preservation Planner who provides technical assistance and serves the liaison between the County and the Commission.

Members each possess a demonstrated special interest, specific knowledge or professional or academic training in the fields of history, architecture, architectural history, planning, archaeology, anthropology, curation, conservation, landscape architecture, historic preservation, urban design or related disciplines.

The duties of the HPC include:

  • To conduct an ongoing survey to identity historically and architecturally significant properties, structures and areas that exemplify the cultural, social, political, or architectural history of the nation, state, and county;
  • To investigate and recommend to the Department of Planning & Zoning the adoption of ordinances designating properties or structures having specific historic, community, or architectural value as landmarks or districts;
  • To keep a list of all properties and structures that have been designated as landmarks or historic districts, including all required for each designation;
  • To review Historic Landmark nominations, Certificate of Appropriateness, and Historic Preservation Tax Credit applications

 Meetings 

Regular public meetings occur on the first Wednesday of every month at starting at 7:00 PM in the first floor conference room of the Harford County Administrative Building, located at 220 S. Main Street, Bel Air, Maryland 21014, unless noted otherwise.  All meeting dates are subject to change.  Announcement of all changes will be posted with reasonable notice on the county website.
